In the hills outside Oaxaca, potters shape this deep black clay by hand, burnishing each surface to a soft sheen before firing it in earthen kilns that give barro negro its signature color. No glaze, no shortcuts — just clay, water, and generations of technique passed through families in San Bartolo Coyotepec.

This vase is finished with a hand-carved floral motif, etched into the clay before it's fired, so every line and petal is the potter's own. Fill it with dried botanicals or let it stand on its own — the carving does the talking.
